The U.S. and us: The future of an alliance
This is the eighth in a series of occasional papers to be produced by the Pacific Security Research Institute (PSRI).
The PSRI was established in Sydney by the Institute of Public Affairs (Incorporated in the ACT. ACN 008 627 727) in April 1989 to undertake research and to play an active part in debate on foreign and defence policy issues in the Asia-Pacific region, in terms of Australia's long-term national interest.
In November 1989, the PSRI held a conference in Melbourne, with shorter meetings in Sydney and Canberra, on the theme 'Pacific 2000: New Patterns of Power'. Speakers at these meetings included senior officials of the US Defense Department, the distinguished Australian journalists Padraic P. McGuinness and Murray Sayle, and Professor Owen Harries, editor of the Washington-based journal The National Interest.
In July 1990, a seminar was held in Melbourne on the theme 'China: Great Walls and Open Doors', with the participation of Winston Lord, former US Ambassador to China, the author Bette Bao Lord, and Professor Ross Garnaut of the Australian National University. Mr Mr and Mrs Lord also spoke in Sydney and Canberra on China and on US strategic policy in the Western Pacific.
The PSRI gratefully acknowledges the assistance of Australian companies and three American foundations.
