Practice-research engagement and civil society: In a globalizing world
The ever-shrinking, globalizing world presents challenges environmental limits, new epidemics, humanitarian crises, accelerating gaps between rich and poor-that exceed the mandates and capacities of existing institutions. Civil society organizations are emerging as increasingly critical sources of innovative ideas and new resources to fill these breaches. Often solutions require generating new knowledge and innovative practice, so constructive engagement between researchers and practitioners is essential to many transnational civil society initiatives.
This volume reports on discussions across the North-South and practice-research divides about civil society's contributions to transnational social problem-solving and social transformation. Grounded in a conference organized by the Hauser Center for Nonprofit Organizations at Harvard University and CIVICUS: The World Alliance for Citizen Participation, the book assesses the current state of practice-research engagement, proposes principles for more effective future engagements, and draws on researcher-practitioner discussions to explore the evolution of transnational civil society and the bases of civil society legitimacy. It argues that capacity for practice-research engagement is essential to transnational initiatives to build a more just and sustainable world, and describes steps for building that capacity-many of them already underway.
