In this book, Michel Rainelli reviews the work of the GATT since its inception. He explains the historical evolution that led the community of nations to create this organization in 1948 to promote free trade. It compares GATT principles with the various forms of protectionism used by individual nations.

He provides a detailed analysis of the causes of the difficulties encountered during the Uruguay Round, and of the results of these lengthy negotiations: in particular, the transformation of the GATT into the WTO (World Trade Organization) on April 15, 1994. Finally, the author shows how, for both factual and theoretical reasons, free trade is now profoundly called into question.
