Tales of cities: The culture and political economy of urban spaces
As the earth becomes increasingly urban and its surface covered by concrete, cities are transformed under the impact of demographical, economical, sosial and cultural factors. The meaning of such ideas as the centre and boundaries of a city is changing. People live in a succession of contiguous urban spaces, each one fragmented into specialized areas of work, production, services, housing and recreation. Such sprawling developments are named conurbation, metropolis or megapolis. Some of the major structures and processes which underly the transformation of urban spaces are studied in the articles of this issue.
