Geneva and disarmament
Linking the name of Geneva with disarmament seems self-evident, so much have the city's international activities in the field of arms control and disarmament marked its history since the great conferences of the League of Nations.
This brochure describes the efforts and the diplomatic successes achieved in Geneva by the international community in advancing the cause of peace and disarmament and the warding off of the spectre of war. This is a hard but necessary task. It requires continuous dialogue between countries to affirm humanitarian law in armed conflict, to halt the arms race, and to create the conditions for peace and disarmament. By hosting the main international disarmament conferences and the organizations charged with bringing about disarmament, Switzerland has contributed to the establishment of peace among peoples. It has always been involved in this cause for the sake of international stability and will continue to abide by its commitments.
As one of the very few cities where so many organizations working in disciplines and fields of world importance rub shoulders. Geneva has all the qualities needed to foster arms control and disarmament throughout the world. Dialogue with various sectors of society is often necessary; this is the message of non-governmental organizations determined to promote international disarmament.
The purpose of this brochure is to provide information which only few studies have so far provided. It is meant to give food for thought to those interested in the problems of disarmament associated with the name of Geneva.
