Decentralised governance in asia countries
Recent years have witnessed a considerable flowering of efforts to decentralize decision-making and planning in the developing countries of Asia. In Decentralized Governance in Asian Countries the contributors examine the theoretical underpinnings of decentralization, the origins of the various systems, their common and distinctive features, and their efficacy in terms of ensuring the meaningful participation of citizens. This thought-provoking volume examines the difference between theory and practice of how the system of decentralized governance should function and how it actually works. Six Asian countries are examined in depth including India, China, Bangladesh, Nepal, the Philippines, and Sri Lanka. The contributors assess the extent to which the positive values of democracy and development have been promoted in each country. By documenting the factors that have encouraged and facilitated decentralization, this volume will go a long way toward furthering the process of civic participation. Providing a bird's-eye view of decentralized governance, this informative volume will be of immense use to planners, policy-makers, administrators, political scientists, and economists.
