Pertamina Mandalika International Street Circuit: An important modality for Indonesia’s sports diplomacy
In the midst of many countries still recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, Indonesia was busy building one of the most anticipated international racing circuits located in the island of Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara: the Pertamina Mandalika International Street Circuit. With a total cost of Rp2.49 trillion (US$ 170 million) during a global recovery from the pandemic.
This Taskap tries to answer if the construction was worth it and how the Mandalika Circuit can effectively contribute to Indonesia’s sports diplomacy efforts.
Initial studies through open sources have found that after successfully hosting a number of international racing events at the Mandalika Circuit (Superbike World Championship, Asia Talent Cup, and MotoGP), Indonesia has enjoyed a number of economic gains, and will continue to do so if the country plays its cards right.
In order to have a more holistic understanding of the how the Mandalika Circuit has become an important modality for Indonesia’s sports diplomacy, this Taskap goes more into depth in exploring not only the economic, but also the political and socio-cultural gains. It also touches upon the question why there has been a lack of Indonesian racers in international motorsports, as well as the future of international racing events held in Indonesia.
This final paper (Taskap) looks closely at the role of MoFA Indonesia (Kemlu) in conducting Indonesia’s sports diplomacy and the how it relates to the Grand Design of National Sports 2021-2045 produced by the Indonesian Ministry of Youth and Sports (Kemenpora). As the ministry that holds the ultimate duty in foreign policy making and diplomacy, this Taskap shows that there is indeed vast room for improvement in relation to sports diplomacy that need to be carried out by Kemlu.
