The future on Indonesia’s cultural diplomacy in the digital age

The significant role of culture in diplomacy has been recognized and its achievements and success stories are the evidence. Cultural diplomacy can take various shapes from arts exhibition, gastronomy, performing traditional music and dances to offering language courses and education exchange. Indonesia has many cultural potentials that should be advantageous to Indonesia's cultural diplomacy and in turn, to other types of diplomacy as well.

The rapid development of information technology, especially in the last decades, has transformed many aspects of society, including culture and diplomacy. The digital age greatly altered the way culture is being exchanged and communicated. In addition, information technology also created the basis of digital diplomacy. The interplay between cultural diplomacy and technology is something Indonesia has to be prepared for and anticipated.

This paper attempts to explore how Indonesia’s cultural diplomacy will be carried out in the future in conjunction with the challenges and opportunities posed by the digital age. In analysing the issue, this paper uses a SWOT analysis approach in combination with a scenario planning method to investigate the possible situations that may arise. The approach is used as a foundation in offering policy and recommendation for the future of Indonesia’s cultural diplomacy.

In conclusion, to face the challenge of Indonesia’s cultural diplomacy in the digital age, having a cohesive national strategy in cultural diplomacy is crucial. This is done in parallel with optimizing the opportunities provided by digital technology.
