North Korea’s nuclear ambition (should the world move toward accepting a nuclear capable North Korea?)
The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) has longed sought to acquire nuclear arsenals for what it perceives as a form of survival and deterrent from the US nuclear threat and invasion. After numerous nuclear and missile tests, the DPRK is assumed to have the technology and capability to launch a nuclear strike to the US with its latest Intercontinental Ballistic Missile.
Various sanctions have been imposed to the DPRK by a number of countries and international organizations, especially after DPRK’s first nuclear test in 2006. Although these sanctions have massively affected the economy, medical sector and people’s livelihood, it has not at all waivered the DPRK’s intention to hold on to its nuclear arsenals.
After almost 2 decades of pressure, coercion and sanctions, denuclearization of the DPRK has yet to be achieved. This is due to the persistence of the DPRK along with its worries that the abandonment of its nuclear program will signal the end of its regime. Bearing this in mind, the international community may opt to continue efforts with the denuclearization of DPRK or begin to opt for other means, such as nuclear arms control and mutual deterrence.
