Voluntary approaches to corporate responsibility: Reading and a resource guide
The focus of this volume is the growing debate on corporate social and environmental responsibility. This debate has taken on a higher profile in recent years as increasing attention has been drawn to the need for a policy response to the phenomenon of globalization. Such a policy response would be one which secures social cohesion and environmental protection.
The first section, “Corporate Codes of Conduct: Self-Regulation in a Global Economy,” written by Rhys Jenkins, details the changes that have taken place in corporate regulation, explores what is behind the growing numbers of corporate codes of conduct, and describes the different stakeholders involved. In the second section, “Regulating Business via Multistakeholder Initiatives: A Preliminary Assessment,” Peter Utting outlines the move from state-led command and control regulation in the 1960s and 1970s, to corporate self-regulation in the 1980s and 1990s, to a more recent trend towards co-regulation. The third section provides sources of further information, including a bibliography and a number of related websites.
