Indonesian migrant workers' empowerment: Entrepreneurship training and collaborative partnership case study Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Singapore
Protection of Indonesian citizen abroad is one of the main main issues in Indonesia's Foreign Policy under President of the Republic of Indonesia, H.E Joko Widodo. The policy also underlined by the direction made by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E Retno Marsudi that the government presence must be felt by Indonesian citizen abroad. It is also a priority to give protection to Indonesian citizen abroad based on the principle of "beyond protection".
The Indonesian Embassy and missions abroad are at the forefront of the protection of Indonesian citizens, especially migrant workers. Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Singapore has implemented the "beyond protection" principle by conducting protection and empowerment programmes for Indonesian migrant workers. In 2021, Embassy of Indonesia in Singapore managed an entrepreneurship program entitled "Pekerja Migran Indonesia (PMI) Bisa Berwirausaha" in the effort to give an opportunity for Indonesian migrant workers to become entrepreneur with proper knowledge and skills and access to fund for micro-business.
Post migrant workers issues become a challenge for any sending states including Indonesia. Many of the post migrant workers return to Indonesia without any sufficient savings or proper skills to earn a living, in the long run this can be a problematic issue for the government. The post migrant issues need to be addressed by the government because often related stakeholders in Indonesia focus more on the pre-placement and placement of migrant workers abroad.
