Lessons learned from working from home during the covid-19 pandemic: Moving towards work life balance in Kemlu
Covid-19 pandemic has brought substantial impact in almost every aspect in our life, including the way we work. The need to maintain physical/social distance has forced many people to work from home (WFH). WFH has become a new norm that must be followed by workers and organizations in various sectors in Indonesia. Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia (Kementerian Luar Negeri/Kemlu) has implemented a WFH system for all officials and employees within Kemlu as an effort to mitigate the spread of Covid-19.
Employees may be unprepared to meet the challenges posed from WFH. Therefore, it is important to assess the impact of WFH during COVID-19 pandemic to the mental health and productivity of Kemlu employees. Moreover, what lessons can be learned from that in order to formulate better and suitable WFH/flexible working arrangement in the future to move towards work life balance in Kemlu.
For assessment, a survey has been conducted to 95 Kemlu employees. From the survey, it can be concluded that WFH increased employee’s productivity, happiness, and work motivation. Furthermore, most agree that they can still maintain their mental health during WFH. However, it is to be noted that most of them often experience zoom fatigue and also has to work extra hours beyond office hours during WFH.
Moreover, most respondents agree that WFH scheme or flexible working arrangements should be implemented in Kemlu post pandemic. They also feel that respecting office hours is the most important aspect for a good WFH. Therefore, if WFH scheme is to be implemented in Kemlu, several measures should be taken including commitment from Kemlu leaders and also regulation regarding the WFH/flexible working arrangements that includes respect for office hours is important to lead a good WFH scheme.
