How soon is now?: Revamping Mofa’s digital economic platforms
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia (MOFA) has designed and implemented several digital platforms to assist diplomats and Missions in boosting economic diplomacy. Such initiatives are deemed necessary as advancements in the digital age have compelled the practice of diplomacy to adapt with constant innovation. However, while MOFA opts to address popular public inquiries through press briefings or social media engagements, a more conventional approach is usually taken to address economic/business inquiries received by Indonesian Missions. This is partly because the abundance of MOFA’s digital economic platforms causes redundancy which in turn render these platforms ineffective. This paper suggests several policy recommendations on how MOFA may improve the effectiveness of its digital economic platforms as practical tools to enhance economic diplomacy. The paper concludes that MOFA’s digital economic platforms can only be relevant for online visitors if it is utilized as the main interface in obtaining information about business opportunities in Indonesia. In doing so, the paper proposes that MOFA needs to streamline its digital economic platforms, formulate a sustainable working system, and synchronize efforts with relevant institutions to minimize duplication.
