Imperialism and nationalism in the Sudan: A Study in constitunional and political development 1899 - 1956
This book provides a comprehensive analysis of the political and constitutional development of Sudan during the Anglo-Egyptian Condominium period (1899–1956). Muddathir ‘Abd al-Rahīm examines how imperial policies shaped Sudan’s administrative structure, social relations, and emerging political movements. The study investigates the dynamics between British and Egyptian authorities, the evolution of Sudanese political institutions, and the gradual rise of nationalist sentiment among educated elites and traditional leaders. Particular attention is given to the growth of political parties, the debates surrounding self-governance, and the constitutional reforms that ultimately paved the way for independence in 1956. Drawing on archival materials, government documents, and scholarly research, the author presents a detailed narrative of the tensions between imperial control and Sudanese aspirations for self-determination. This work is an essential reference for understanding colonial governance, African nationalism, and the origins of modern Sudanese political identity.
