Outward investment: Exploring opportunities of palm oil investment in Latin America
The Indonesian diplomacy priorities under Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, Retno LP Marsudi as announced in 2019 highlights outward investment as one of the key elements in the Economic Diplomacy. However so far, there were no significant progress on achieving the objective through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic Indonesia programes. This paper proposes Indonesia’s outward investment through exploring opportunities of palm oil investment in Latin America. The situation of palm oil industry in Indonesia, together with increasing global and domestic demand of palm oil open up opportunities to start outward investment in palm oil sector. On the other hand, Latin American countries have the potentials for Indonesian palm oil company to invest. Palm oil industry has been growing for decades in the Latin America region and the prospect for future expansion is attractive due to increased demand for export and domestic consumption. Additionally, the Region of Latin America has been a non- traditional market for Indonesia. So far, efforts to increase business activities between Indonesia and the region has been positive. However, by adding outward investment policy in the region, it will enhance Indonesia’s engagement in the region and further increase economic relations. This calls for the Ministry to introduce policy and strategic options to promote outward investment on palm oil sector in Latin America.
