Strengthening economic intelligence to advance Indonesia’s economic diplomacy
In the past years, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic Indonesia (MOFA RI) has refocused its priorities, including to further advance economic diplomacy to help accelerate the recovery of Indonesia’s economy. To achieve this, various policies to further boost trade and investment ties have been actively pursued in recent years. Moreover, numerous breakthroughs have also been undertaken within the Ministry itself, such as the appointment of the Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs as the lead figure of economic diplomacy in MOFA RI; the establishment of Team for the Acceleration of Economic Recovery; as well as the development of digital platforms to facilitate business match-making opportunities. Looking at these developments, as diplomats play a more strategic role, there is a need to further develop their knowledge, expertise, and skills-set in the field of economic diplomacy. In this regard, this paper highlights the necessity to strengthen one of the important tools, namely Economic Intelligence. This includes important skill-sets, such as research and analyzing important data, formulating strategic economic framework and recommendations, as well as following up on reporting and promoting aspects for Indonesia’s national interests.
This paper aims to explore further on the capabilities of diplomats in undertaking economic issues, especially in the term of economic intelligence. Moreover, it will also delve into the role of MOFA RI in strengthening Indonesia’s diplomats’ skills and knowledge, as well as bolstering our economic intelligence system. This paper will also offer several policy recommendations for MOFA RI for a more comprehensive strategy that focuses on strengthening economic intelligence in order to advance Indonesia’s economic diplomacy, through collaboration with key stakeholders.
