The way forward in facilitating sustainable peace in Afghanistan
This paper argues that “the end of war” in Afghanistan as claimed by the US President does not necessarily translate to the beginning of peace. The people of Afghanistan, especially girls, women and minority groups are still facing structural and cultural violence. Left unaddressed, the people of Afghanistan will keep finding themselves in new cycles of conflicts with more grievances and violence.
This paper explains why Indonesia should keep playing its active role in supporting sustainable peace in Afghanistan. By looking into some changes in Taliban, this paper explores different approaches that MOFA can consider given the current situation and its limitations.
The paper finds that the new Taliban might welcome initiatives from external parties as long as they are conveyed through culturally appropriate narratives. It further argues that Indonesia should assist Taliban -the interim government- in providing public goods through partnership with local and traditional civil societies.
