The political representation of Indonesian diaspora post 2019 elections
While absorbing the new culture, diaspora maintain their old tradition and love towards their home country, and become so prominent in so many fields. Despite their desire to contribute to Indonesia's progress, they are still under-represented politically. The merging of their votes in Jakarta District brings subsequent impact on the channeling their interests.
The main focus of this study is the issue of political representation and diaspora organization. It discusses the diasporas’ view of those elected from Jakarta II District in representing them, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs role to promote the diaspora political representation. Based on the survey, interviews, and literature study, political representation is believed to remain a critical issue in Indonesia. Not only diaspora, citizens living at home are under-represented politically.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs should actively play their role in promoting diaspora’s political representation, by improving the quality of citizen’s data, facilitating better communication between the diaspora and the House’ members, and supporting the call for special electoral districts abroad.
