Leveraging world trade organization tools to enhance economic diplomacy
Economic diplomacy has taken center stage in Indonesia foreign policy since President Joko Widodo took office. Boosting Indonesia’s export and the growing protectionism in international trade signify the need to enhance Indonesia economic diplomacy. However, the ideas of economic diplomacy is yet to be backed by institutionalized programs that aims to increase skills and knowledge of diplomats. Enhancing knowledge in economic diplomacy is crucial to ensure that Indonesian diplomats are able to manage streams of information to generate better responses to the changing international economic challenges.
World Trade Organization provides tools to help its members, especially developing country like Indonesia, to acquire useful information on global trade and economies. Tool like WTO e-learning is particularly important to assist in the absence of national training programs. At the same time, basic tools such as Integrated- Trade Intelligence Portal, Tariff Online Analysis, and E-Ping Alert System are important in providing schedules of concessions and trade policy measures of WTO members. Information contained are crucial to gather market access information as it provides consistent information of members based on their notification. It is then vital for Indonesia to leverage these tools when exercising market intelligence. Embedding these tools into the Indonesia’s diplomatic training could become a first step to boost the knowledge of diplomats in order to enhance Indonesia’s economic diplomacy.
