Protecting Indonesian seafarers abroad: A policy recommendation paper based on practice in Fiji
Protection of migrant workers has been one of Indonesia’s foreign policy cornerstones. For the past few years there were significant improvements on the protection and management of Indonesian migrant workers but not at the same extend when it comes to seafarers working on board of foreign fishing vessel. Fiji as the hub in the pacific attracts many Indonesian seafarers working on board of foreign fishing vessels. Unlike dealing with regular migrant worker, seafarers working in the fishing industry provides its own set of challenges to overcome. Internally there is a problem with the current legal system overseeing seafarers, additionally the growing cases happening and the difficulty to monitor possess challenge to protect Indonesian seafarers.
It is imperative to push for legal reform and for the Ministry to pursue a database approach and publishing findings aid relevant ministries.
