Providing services to Indonesian Nationals in Israel: A policy recommendation
With respect to the rights of a person to move and migrate, the Indonesian government has never restricted its citizens from settling in other countries. The currents of globalization and technological developments have contributed to the migration of Indonesian citizens with new patterns, increasingly varied goals, and toward previously unimaginable places.
The existence of Indonesian citizens in Israel is a reality. They are also entitled to assistance from their country under the principle of public service. On the other hand, we must admit that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is unprepared for the consequences of Indonesian citizens' presence in that state, particularly how to provide services comparable to those provided to Indonesian citizens in other countries.
This phenomenon must be addressed appropriately. Especially since opening diplomatic relations with Israel is not an option for Indonesia. In this regard, the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs should be the catalyst for sparking discussions and fostering political will among stakeholders.
The title and subject of this paper, Providing Services to Indonesian Nationals in Israel, describe an attempt to solve the problem. Most importantly, to look into solutions and policy options that can be implemented on the ground while still adhering to the country's foreign policy principles and ideals.
