Redefining Indonesia’s role in contributing to the Palestinian – Israeli conflict solution under the expansion of the Abraham Accords
Following the signing of the Abraham Accords between the US, Israel, the UAE, and Bahrain on 15 September 2020, PM Benjamin Netanyahu expected to establish Israel’s full normal relations with Indonesia and Saudi Arabia.
However, Indonesia’s foreign policy on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict has never changed to date, as a staunch supporter for Palestine. Indonesia consistently demonstrates a strong commitment to the Palestinian cause in the international, regional, and Islamic world stages. Indonesia’s position has been unequivocal and uncompromising, no diplomatic relations with Israel before the realization of the two-state solution and the establishment of a Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
While Israel views its occupation as a return to the Land of Israel based on the theological aspiration in Judaism, Indonesia sees such occupation as part of the colonialization, which violates the preamble of Indonesia’s 1945 Constitution, “Whereas independence is the inalienable right of all nations; therefore, colonialism must be abolished in the world as it is not in conformity with humanity and justice.”
Furthermore, PM Benjamin Netanyahu’s new right-wing government, comprises several extremist parties. Violent confrontations between Israelis and Palestinians have been increasing. The impact is not limited to the expansion of settlements or calls for Israeli sovereignty over the Palestinian territories. The far-right’s rise has also enhanced the identity conflict by constructing an extreme Israeli religious-national narrative about the conflict.
Establishing diplomatic relations with Israel is so far not necessary for Indonesia. To contribute more to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict solution, Indonesia might redefine its contributions by increasing the P-to-P programs of interfaith/intercultural dialogue involving parties in Israel and Palestine, in addition to Indonesia’s existing contributions of political support, economic relations, and technical assistance for Palestinian.
The P-to-P program/dialogue is designed to construct counter-narrative to the extreme Israeli religious-national narrative about the conflict. The Islamic organization of NU can be considered as the Indonesian Government’s partner. The partnership is expected to produce the recontextualization of obsolete and problematic tenets of religious orthodoxy, in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Therefore, the repeatedly violence on behalf of faith can be minimized, even the deep-rooted conflict can be permanently terminated.
