Indonesia mesmerizing the world: developing and globalizing Indonesian traditional music to South Africa
Music has long played a role in diplomacy, it can bring people together and it can be used for blunt diplomatic propaganda. Music has also been used for more subtle promotion of national interests, but it can of course be used for more robust diplomacy.
Indonesia is a country that is rich in cultural heritage and has used some of its cultural heritage, especially Indonesian traditional music, as a means to undertake cultural diplomacy such as the gamelan, angklung, kulintang. These traditional musical instruments from Indonesia have been frequently played in foreign countries and have won the love of people especially in countries like United States and Europe.
South Africa is a strategic partner for Indonesia in the African region. The two nations have already been interacting and engaging for quite some time. Indonesia has also been a strong supporter for South African’s struggle against the Apartheid regime. Although the two nations share the same history of being colonized and the cultural roots which was brought by the prisoners of war from the Dutch East Indies, Indonesia needs to revitalize this relationship, one of which is by introducing and developing Indonesian traditional instruments to the people of South Africa.
There is a great potential to develop Indonesian traditional music and arts for the people of South Africa. Strengthening through cultural diplomacy is expected to pave the way for cooperation in other fields such as such as trade, tourism and investment (TTI). Ties linking to South Africa from the past shall pave the way for Indonesian traditional musical diplomacy.
The government of the Republic of Indonesia is recommended to support the Indonesian Embassy in Pretoria to cooperate with formal and/or informal institutions such as schools, music schools, universities to promote traditional music in South Africa. The Indonesian government can assist by providing the traditional musical instruments, training the teachers, exchanging traditional music players and through visiting programs.
This paper will mainly provide the strong foundation for the government of Indonesia to enhance its traditional music diplomacy to South Africa. Furthermore, this paper will offer recommendations on further steps that need to be taken in order for Indonesia’s music diplomacy to succeed.
