Mainstreaming “Islam Indonesia” as a significant tool of Indonesia’s Foreign Policy
The Indonesian government has set priorities for Indonesia’s foreign policy known as Priorities 4+1, where Priority III is one among them, namely Sovereignty Diplomacy. The main focus of diplomacy is to maintain the integrity of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia and to cooperate with others in promoting Indonesia’s identity, namely pluralism and tolerance which grew since ancient times and is presently alive within the Indonesian society, even have become Indonesia’s national identity.
Indonesia is known as the fourth most populous nation in the world; home to the world’s largest Muslim population; the world’s third largest democracy; as well as the country where democracy, Islam, and modernity go hand in hand.
These modalities, which are related to Islam in Indonesia, can be the source of Indonesia’s soft power and can be well capitalized by the Government in order to safeguard Indonesia's national interests in the midst of the dynamics of world affairs. At the same time it can also be an alternative approach in resolving the world’s problems, particularly those that require a religious approach, such as the humanitarian problems that have religious roots.
Some countries have implemented the strategy of utilizing its soft power related to religion, such as Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, as well as the United States of America.
In this regard, it is timely for Indonesia to mainstream Islam Indonesia by creating a forum similar to the Bali Democracy Forum (BDF), and work together in collaboration with the largest religious organizations in Indonesia, namely PBNU and PP Muhammadiyah.
In addition, in the context of mainstreaming Islam Indonesia, the presence of Indonesia in the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) also needs to be enhanced, among others by becoming a full member of the OIC through ratification of the OIC Charter as well as by assigning Indonesian professionals to become OIC officials.
With that kind of strategies, Indonesia can enhance and expand its contribution to the world and in turn will raise Indonesia's positive image and leadership in the eyes of the world.
Furthermore, with an enhanced posture and bargaining power of Indonesia, it will certainly widen the path for Indonesia to attain its national interests in the world, including its economic interests.
