Indonesia’s energy diplomacy in Central Europe: strategizing to advance the Indonesia – Slovakia renewable energy collaboration
Indonesia and Slovakia are two champion nations in different continents of the world that share a common vision in the renewable energy sector: promoting sustainable energy development and reducing greenhouse gas emissions to achieve SDG 7 targets by 2030. In doing so, Indonesia and Slovakia have been making efforts to increase the share of renewable energy in their energy mix, thus creating a window of opportunities for potential collaboration to address common challenges of global energy security.
This research paper explores the path towards an enhanced bilateral energy partnership for Indonesia and Slovakia by analyzing both countries’ common new and renewable energy potentials, namely solar, wind, geothermal, and even nuclear power. The renewable energy potential of both countries was analyzed, and the author identified four possible future scenarios that are ideal and actionable through a Scenario Planning Method, while considering that one future scenario could be unachievable when coupled with two variables of of uncertainties.
The scenario that is the most ideal could be further translated in a concrete manner into an implementable policy option for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Bratislava to enhance bilateral renewable energy partnership.
