Strengthening economic diplomacy through the promotion of Indonesian pharmaceutical products to African countries
Countries in the African region are still struggling to meet the need of pharmaceutical products such as medicines and vaccines. The African population are still prone to diseases such as diphtheria, malaria, and AIDS, hence raising demand for pharmaceutical products. By taking into account the growing pharmaceutical industry in Indonesia in the post-pandemic era, Indonesian government must be able to grasp this opportunity to intensify the promotion of medicines and vaccines to African countries as part of the strategy to enhance Indonesia’s economic diplomacy.
This paper develops a future scenario where in 2035 Indonesia envisions to have an expanded and secured market access of Indonesian pharmaceutical products in the African region. To realize this vision, several milestones are set-up along with relevant strategic policies that need to be taken in each milestone. Four key policy choices are offered in this paper to intensify the promotion of Indonesia’s pharmaceutical products in Africa, namely to increase development aids in Africa, negotiate for faster and more efficient medicines and vaccines registration processes, negotiate for less-barriers trade agreement, and encourage the participation of Indonesian pharmaceutical companies to invest in Africa.
Among these multi-approach strategies, this paper emphasizes that Indonesia must increase development aids/grants provision in the health sector in Africa. In this context, aids/grant assistance aims not only to support African countries in meeting their needs for medicines and vaccines but also as a means to build closer relations between Indonesia and Africa. Indonesia can strengthen its positive image as a reliable development partner for Africa and create new business opportunities for Indonesian pharmaceutical companies, including the expansion of outbound investment. This can help boost the export of Indonesian pharmaceutical products to Africa and increase benefit for the Indonesian economy.
