The Role of MoFA to strengthen the Internationalization of the Indonesian language

The internationalization of a language is not merely an exercise in linguistics but a strategic pursuit of a nation’s cultural diplomacy and global influence. In the case of the Indonesian Language, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia plays a pivotal role in promoting the language on the international stage. This executive summary explores the multifaceted role of the Ministry in advancing the internationalization of the Indonesian Language could be done through the Cultural Ambassadorship by facilitating cultural exchange programs and language initiatives, the Ministry can fosters cross-cultural understanding and appreciation.

Secondly, the Ministry through the Indonesia Missions abroad support the establishment of BIPA Program (Bahasa Indonesia untuk Penutur Asing), that do not just teach Indonesian Language but also provide insights into the cultural nuances of Indonesia. By doing so, the Ministry encourages foreigners to study and engage with the Indonesian Language. Other effort that can be done is Collaboration and Partnership with a diverse range of partners including educational institutions, Indonesianists, alumni of BIPA Program, alumni of Indonesian Government Scholarship as well as Indonesian Diaspora. In today's interconnected world, the Ministry can also harnesses the power of digital diplomacy to reach a global audience.

Indonesian Language could also support Indonesia’s Soft Power where Bahasa Indonesia is at the heart of it. The Ministry can actively promotes the language as a means to enhance Indonesia’s Soft Power on the World Stage. As more people around the world learn the Language, Indonesia’s cultural influence grows.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia plays a pivotal role in advancing the internationalization of the Indonesian Language. As Indonesian Language continues to gain prominence as a language of diplomacy, culture, and communication, the Ministry’s role in strengthening its internationalization becomes increasingly vital.
