Elevating Indonesia-Russia relations to a strategic partnership
Indonesia and Russia have the potential to interact in a range of sectors. Cooperation is created not just bilaterally, but also regionally and worldwide, through organizations such as the G20, APEC, and others, as well as in response to global challenges. The two countries decided to further their collaboration by forging a strategic alliance. Both parties are preparing the Declaration on Strategic Partnership between the two countries, which will be signed at a meeting of the two presidents in the near future.
Various geopolitical dynamics, such as rivalries between powerful countries such as the United States, China, and Russia, and especially the Russia-Ukraine conflict, are now influencing the global situation. These geopolitical forces have a significant influence on Indonesia's relations with Russia. The West has a huge influence on Indonesia, so Indonesia limits or does not cooperate with Russia.
In accordance with an independent and active foreign policy, Indonesia can play an important role in the midst of global geopolitics for national interests. Indonesia and Russia have many interests, opportunities and potential for cooperation, in addition to the challenges they face. Even though geopolitics in the Central and Eastern European region are very dynamic and unstable, Indonesia can further enhance bilateral cooperation with Russia and elevate relations to a strategic partnership. A number of main aspects of cooperation between the two countries include increased diplomatic engagement, economic and trade cooperation, tourism, energy, technology and innovation, as well as cooperation in international forums. However, reframing the two nations' relationship involves on-going commitment from both parties, with an emphasis on mutual respect, trust, and common interests.
