The future of Indonesia-EU FLEGT VPA: Rethinking EU's commitment toward sustainable timber product
In an effort to combat deforestation and promote sustainable forest development, FLEGT (Forest Law Enforcement Governance and Trade) has become one of the most prominent initiatives. Indonesia is among the first partner countries to sign a FLEGT VPA with the EU. It is important to note that Indonesia is the first country in the world to successfully implement and issue FLEGT licenses through the SVLK-TLAS system. The purpose of this paper is to analyze Indonesia's and the EU's commitments to fulfilling their legal obligations under FLEGT VPA. EU has failed to meet its obligations under the agreement, including promoting a favorable position of licensed timber in EU markets through both public and private procurement policies, as shown by the findings. By proposing EU Deforestation Free Regulations, the EU is also trying to abandon FLEGT Licensing.
