A journey into Diplomacy : Memoirs of an Indonesian Diplomat
Johan B.P. Maramis made his mark in multilateral diplomacy . During his first assignment as Counsellor ( 1960-1965 ) at the Permanent Mission of Indonesia to the United Nations in New York he played an important part in the establishment of two United Nations bodies namely UNDP and UNCTAD . During his second assignment as Ambassador / Deputy Permanent Representative ( 1969-1972 ) he was elected to the high office of President of Economic and Social Council ( ECOSOC ) one of the principal organs of the United Nations and presided over its sessions in 1970 coinciding with the 25th anniversary of the United Nations . He also initiated and supported Adam Malik's presidency of the United Nations General Assembly in 1971. His instructive accounts on Indonesia's withdrawal from the United Nations and on the question of West Irian ( Act of Free Choice ) are worth reading
