Recollections of an Indonesian Diplomat in the Sukarno era
Ganis Harsono has been an eyewitness of many of the important events in Indonesia's recent political history. Educated by the Dutch, but coming from a family steeped in Javanese traditions, he stands astride the old and the new in Indonesian life. As a student in Bandung during the Japanese occupation, as a news broad caster and commentator on the Voice of Free Indonesia in Bandung and Yogyakarta, as press attache in London and Washington, and as spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs and deputy foreign minister he has observed at close hand the course of Indonesia's development as an independent nation. His Recollections began with family life in pre-revolutionary Java, and then moved to the activist life of a student during the Japanese occupation and the Revolution, culminating with the international life of a diplomat.
