Unleashing water diplomacy
In the midst of the growing food, energy and climate crises, the issue of water is becoming more strategic. Water not only touches upon people’s daily lives, but also intersects many interests in foreign policy. With its immense capabilities to do more, Indonesia should elevate the issue of water in its foreign policy, in which Kemlu plays a central role by unleashing water diplomacy. This must be given a priority as global water challenges in the context of climate change and SDGs are too big and strategic to ignore. Maintaining the status quo no longer fits for purpose. Kemlu needs to invest more on preventive approach to water issues, rather than a business-as-usual one.
Indonesia should be in the axis to be able to steer the directions, being part of the solution as well as reaping the opportunities. Through water diplomacy, Indonesia is hoped to be able to further distinguish itself positively in the increasingly competitive international arena. Furthermore, water diplomacy will keep Kemlu relevant as ever in the public eye. Indonesia needs to launch water diplomacy in the context of long-term national interests, whilst taking steps to better prepare for leadership events in the short-term such as the 10th World Water Forum in 2024.
