"Returning to Asia": Japan-Indonesia relations, 1930s-1942
In addition to tracing the development of Japan's southward-advance policies from the early 1930s to the outbreak of the "Greater East Asia War" in both government and private sectors, an outstanding feature of this book is that the author has looked into the trends within the na tionalist movement in Indonesia connected to the Japanese moves. Especially noteworthy is the analysis of the differing posture of the two groups of Indonesian nationalists: the right-inclined group that sympathized with the Japanese ambition to destroy the international status quo with a hope of utilizing it toward their own racial liberation, while the left inclined group which was ideologically anti-fascism strengthened their posture of resistance against Japan's southward advance Such approach to the question of "challenge and response" between Japan and Indonesia makes this volume a truly unique accomplishment
