Indonesia's post-Soeharto democracy movement
Is the historical opportunity to sustain and develop the world's at least nominally third largest democracy a lost cause? Is the post-Socharto democracy movement capable of recovering and regrouping - despite being marginalized by dominating forces that have taken over the process of reformation and western powers that give priority to their own security? This book is a unique joint effort by concerned scholars and reflective activists to review and analyse the character, problems and options facing the democracy movement. A brief general survey and nineteen specific case studies have been carried out within a joint framework in various parts of the country. These are supplemented by a series of associated essays and comments by leading contributors, including John Bamba, Björn Beckman, Kavi Chongkittavorn, Hemasari Dharmabumi, Vedi R. Hadiz, Gerry van Klinken, J. Nasikun, Ita F. Nadia, Mochtar Pabottingi, Herlambang Perdana, Dita Sari, Joel Rocamora, Santoso, the late Th. Sumartana, and Rahman Tolleng.
