The Importance of Consolidated Overseas Voters’ Database in the Indonesian Missions for Successful Indonesian General Election Abroad
On February 2024, Indonesia will hold its general election, directly electing the President, Vice President, and legislative council members (DPR, DPRD, DPD). This event will be the second time Indonesia has had a direct general election following the 2019 general election. Voters’ data is a crucial tool that supports the general election, although it constantly becomes an issue. Even the accuracy of providing current, high-quality voters data has always been a contentious issue, particularly regarding the accuracy of data on the total number of voters, precisely overseas voters. The country's problem in every general election held abroad is the voter’s data accuracy, especially the overseas voters’ data accuracy. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) and the Indonesian missions abroad must deal with this matter to ensure a successful general election.
One form of protection for Indonesian citizens provided by the MoFA and the Indonesian missions is the guarantee of the political rights of Indonesian citizens overseas, in this case, their right to vote in the general elections. During the Annual Press Statement on January 2023, Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi stated that MoFA has coordinated with all Indonesian missions abroad for data updating of the Indonesian citizens. This is essential to ensure the political rights of Indonesian citizens abroad and the accountability of Indonesian overseas voters’ data.
This paper examines how the MoFA and Indonesian missions dealt with the issue of accurate overseas voters’ data. This paper aims to identify the role of MoFA and Indonesian missions in conducting general elections abroad, particularly in preparing an accurate and up-to-date voter database for the 2019 Election and preparation for the 2024 Election. The paper will also discuss the importance of Portal Peduli WNI in creating an integrated Indonesian citizens' database for MoFA and Indonesian missions, as well as proposed policy recommendations in utilizing and revamping the platform for further development to ensure the data accuracy of Indonesian citizens’ abroad intended for future Indonesian general elections.
