Diplomat Samapta (DIPSA): Tuning up Indonesia’s engine of diplomacy (improving physical fitness of Indonesian diplomats)

Busron Sodikun - Nama Orang;

Being a diplomat in the 21st century takes more than just suits and gowns. It is also making you wear boots, a traditional dress, tactical trousers, and even a helmet. The realm of a diplomat’s task is expanding, yet the space is shrinking. The work tide is moving faster than the time itself and sometimes it feels like they are burning a candle on both ends.

To address this challenging reality, diplomats must be fully equipped with the best knowledge, technical, and practical skills in diplomacy, as well as a strong mentality and physical fitness. This paper will discuss the importance of physical fitness and the awareness of healthy lifestyles of Indonesian diplomats, and formulate the best way to increase their physical fitness.

This paper also proposes two categories of policy recommendations as ideas for improvement, including short-term options (weekly physical activities; posters education; Samapta Test/physical fitness) dan long-term options (Samapta Test for a new diplomat’s recruiting process, mandated annual Samapta Test, annual medical check-up, application of representation fund for diplomat’s physical exercises/sports activities, and a comprehensive health insurance plan).

The result of the questionnaire has shown that only 4.7% of diplomats are doing regular physical exercise 4-5 times a week, and it signifies the reason why 64.8% of Indonesian diplomats in Jakarta claimed that they have physical health issues. The top three physical health issues that they are having are obesity (51%), high cholesterol level (40.7%), and hypertension (14.8%). Almost all of the respondents (98,1%) are appealing to the MoFA to support them in increasing their physical fitness.

DIPSA will be able to address the challenging issue of the physical fitness of diplomats, with a comprehensive assessment including cardiorespiratory fitness, body composition, flexibility, muscular strength, and muscular endurance.
