Human rights in India: Problems and perspectives
The concept of human rights has assumed importance globally during the past few decades and has international significance as every country is subject to international scrutiny by the world body which indicts member states for violations. While there is increasingly widespread concern for universal respect and observance of human rights, gross violation of internationally recognize norms continue unabated in almost all parts of the world. The overall situation has been characterize by large. scale breaches of civil and political rights, as well as economic, social and cultural rights. The rights to life, to an adequate standard of living, to freedom of expression, to protection from torture and inhuman treatment, arbitrary arrest and many of the common standards of achievement for all people and all nations are as far from realization now, as ever. The obligations set out in the course of international conventions and multilateral treaties for the promotion and protection of human rights and accepted by most of the Governments are flouted by them with impunity.
