Sri Lanka: Problems of governance
The book explains the paradox that is Sri Lanka. If the island nation has not lived up to the promise of its early years of independence, it is because of the assault made on the fundamentals of a stable political order with its emphasis on pluralism and secularism by those emphasising an ethnic identity based on language and religion. The problems of governance have been complicated by the persistence of the ethnic conflict that could have been sorted out with a little more accommodating stance by the Sinhalese majority on the Tamil grievances.
