Promoting Indonesian language for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) Program: Case study of BIPA program online distance learning in Austria
Indonesian Language for Foreign Speakers (Bahasa Indonesia bagi Penutur Asing-BIPA) Program has been introduced to foreign students across the world through Indonesian Embassies as a part of soft diplomacy. Since the start of the BIPA Program, numerous Indonesian embassies have worked in tandem with the Ministry of Education and Culture to send out Bahasa Indonesia teachers to teach the language abroad. In order to launch Bahasa Indonesia Classes, the embassies work with universities, Indonesia Diaspora and Friends of Indonesia in accredited country.
In 2020, the world had a severe pandemic of COVID-19 that impacted all aspects of life. Students cannot go to school; they must study from home via the Internet. This condition also affected the BIPA Program classes. Since March 2020, the BIPA Program in Vienna has been implementing the online distance learning program. The number of students in the BIPA Program in Vienna has been increasing since the introduction of the online learning method. However, after the pandemic of COVID-19 was over, the BIPA Online Program could still be given to the students to reach out to those who live far away from the Embassy or Consulate General that has the BIPA Program.
