From the palace of the dead: Bishop belo and the struggle for East Timor
Throughout the twentieth century, we have seen far too many brutal attacks on peoples of different ethnic backgrounds and religious faiths throughout the world. I have a great sympathy for the people of East Timor, who, like my own people in Tibet, have been attacked and oppressed for simply trying to keep their own culture and identity alive. It is heartening to see people who have the courage to resist such oppression, genocide, and merciless attempts to extinguish their culture. Moreover, to my mind, it is especially inspiring when people combine spiritual strength with non-violence in their resistance. Bishop Belo is just such a person. But if men and women like him are to achieve their goals of winning greater rights and freedoms for their people through non-violent means, they need our wholehearted support.
