Gulf security quest for regional cooperation: A report of the international peace academy
The revolution in Iran, the American hostage crisis and the Soviet inter vention in Afghanistan had made it necessary for the United States to take steps to protect its interests in that region. The security of the oil supply routes through the Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea was vital to the West and Japan. The Iran-Iraq war made it even more important to act to safeguard western security interests, but now the Arab Gulf states faced new risks.
