War and civilization
In this volume Mr. Fowler, selecting from the six-volume edition of Toynbee's A Study of History, brings together a large number of passages which bear on the problem of war, which was already afflict- ing mankind at the earliest stage to which civilization can be traced. Although Toynbee, in discussing its history and present significance, has no facile remedies to propose, he believes experience has shown that of the various plans to check Militarism and War, the most promising is that governments should combine to resist aggression and to remove its causes. The knowledge and deep re- flection on which he bases his views are evident in this important and pertinent book, which supplements D. C. Somer- vell's one-volume abridgement of A Study of History, since most of the passages in the present selection do not appear in Mr. Somervell's book.
