On October 1, 1982, the German Bundestag elected Helmut Kohl Federal Chancellor. Of the 495 votes cast, 256 were cast for the leader of the Opposition and chairman of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, who thereupon replaced Helmut Schmidt (SPD) as head of government. After the results of the vote were announced by the Vice President of the Bun- destag, Richard Stucklen, the supporters of the newly elected Chancellor gave him a standing ovation lasting several minutes, while the losers made no effort to conceal their despondency. Actually, however, the outcome of the parliamentary vote could not have come as a surprise to anyone.
