Demography from scanty evidence: Central Africa in the colonial era
In essence a manual for reconstructing the demographic past of Central Africa, this is the first concerted attempt to recover the pre-1960 demography of an African region on the basis of colonial statistics. The authors begin by exploring the unexpected strengths, as well as the shortcomings, of extant records. They proceed to discuss how various social science disciplines can contribute to our understanding of Central Africa's recent demographic past. Finally, they examine case studies that synthesize a broad variety of approaches. The book can serve as a handbook not just for Africa, but for any part of the world where numbers are available, but not entirely reliable.
