Dilemmas of democracy in latin America: crises and opportunity
This book examines the challenges facing democracy in Latin America, focusing on the decline of public support for democratic governance following the third wave of democratization in the 1980s and 1990s. It explores the political, historical, cultural, and sociological factors that contribute to democratic instability in the region, including the growing preference for strong government and the potential resurgence of authoritarian tendencies. The book also analyzes the shortcomings of United States foreign policy toward Latin America, arguing that the region's distinct historical experiences and political traditions cannot be understood through the American model of democracy. Howard J. Wiarda emphasizes the importance of a renewed and culturally sensitive approach to U.S. policy, based on a deeper understanding of Latin America's diverse histories and societies. Ultimately, this work highlights the crises and opportunities in strengthening democratic institutions and fostering sustainable democratic traditions throughout Latin America.
