Indonesia’S G20 Presidency: Opportunity To Support Post Covid-19 Economic Recovery
The Group of Twenty (G20) was established in 1999 out of the global economic crisis and has played an important role in supporting economic development as well as addressing current challenges across the globe. Despite its informal nature, G20 is a major world economic forum that has a strategic position because its 20 members collectively represent around 65% of the world's population, 79% of global trade, and at least 85% of the world economy.
Indonesia will assume the G20’s Presidency starting 1 December 2021, as stated in the Riyadh Leaders Declaration in November 2020, one year ahead of the earlier schedule. As G20 President, Indonesia will not only be hosting a series of G20 meetings and events but also playing a leadership role to influence international cooperation and global governance since the G20 is a powerful informal agenda-setting group.
This is going to be the highlight of Indonesia’s diplomacy because it is a historical moment to be entrusted with the leadership of G20. This is also an opportunity for Indonesia to maximize its G20 Presidency for national and global post-pandemic economic recovery.
