The nexus between climate and security: defining Indonesia’s foreign policy on climate and security
This paper examines the growing international recognition of the relationship between climate change and security, particularly within multilateral forums such as the United Nations. It analyses Indonesia’s cautious approach to this issue, considering concerns over national sovereignty and the securitization of climate change. Through a case study of Somalia and an assessment of global developments, the study explores opportunities for Indonesia to engage in shaping the climate-security agenda in line with its national interests. It recommends promoting international cooperation and urging developed countries to strengthen support for developing countries in climate change mitigation, adaptation, and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
