Space diplomacy: positioning Indonesia to tap opportunities in the unknown universe

Our universe is a vast. For more than sixty years, mankind has been trying to explore outer space and develop the required technologies in the process. So far, research and studies show that outer space possess infinite resources and opportunities that can benefit the well-being of Earth people. One interesting development is that “who’s” doing those research and development are now shifting, from governmental agencies such as NASA or ESA, to private firms and individuals. This is the age of commercial space, driving by the successful missions by billionaires like Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and Richard Branson. They have made triumphant space investment and discoveries, catapulting space exploration as trendsetter in development and futurist studies.
At the moment, Indonesia stands among emerging space faring nations. Considering the trend of commercial space, Indonesia needs an alternative approach in engaging with the non-state actors, particularly to financing and technology. In this sense, Kemlu holds significant role to optimize
abroad missions and setting comprehensive diplomacy agenda.
