Expanding Kemlu - Indonesian Exim Bank partnership: National Interest Account (N I A) – an option to finance Indonesia’s culinary diplomacy
Gastronomy diplomacy serves as an instrument for promoting Indonesian culture while supporting national economic recovery. This study originates from the author’s experience during her posting at the Embassy of Indonesia in Tokyo, where Indonesian restaurants in Japan were less prevalent than Thai, Vietnamese, and Malaysian establishments. Limited data on Indonesian restaurants and insufficient engagement between diplomatic representatives and culinary entrepreneurs also posed challenges to culinary diplomacy. Through the “Ngopi Bersama KBRI” initiative, the author established communication with Indonesian culinary entrepreneurs in Japan to understand their needs, challenges, and expectations regarding government support. Against this background, the study aims to formulate a financing strategy that reflects entrepreneurs’ actual circumstances and needs to strengthen Indonesia’s culinary diplomacy. The proposed strategy is expected to enhance the promotion of Indonesian cuisine abroad while contributing to national economic recovery.
