Toward Indonesian tourism revival during and post pandemic: redefining the role of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly affected Indonesia’s tourism sector, creating challenges for economic recovery and the livelihoods of local communities. Revitalizing tourism therefore requires collaborative efforts to reconnect markets with destinations and strengthen international cooperation. This paper highlights the role of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in supporting Indonesia’s tourism recovery through initiatives such as establishing travel corridor arrangements, promoting the integration of health applications and vaccination certificates, and facilitating cooperation with international airlines to revive tourism in Bali. At the regional level, the Ministry supports cooperation through the ASEAN Tourism Post-COVID-19 Recovery Plan, while its global engagement includes collaboration with the United Nations World Tourism Organization. Strengthening tourism diplomacy and international coordination is essential to supporting the recovery of Indonesia’s tourism industry, improving connectivity, and sustaining the sector’s contribution to the national economy and local livelihoods.
